What does a nofollow link actually mean?<\/p>\n

We’ve already touched on this briefly when discussing Robots.txt<\/a>, but let’s dig a little deeper.<\/p>\n

A nofollow link is a hyperlink that tells search engines (like Google) not<\/strong> to pass any value to the linked page\u2014it simply serves as a reference.<\/p>\n

The “value” being referred to here is what’s commonly known as pagerank<\/em>\u2014essentially a measure of authority that can be transferred to the linked page.<\/p>\n

A nofollow link contains the attribute rel=”nofollow” in the HTML code.<\/p>\n

Here’s what it might look like:<\/strong><\/p>\n

< a href=\u201dwww.mickyweis.dk\u201d rel=\u201dnofollow\u201d ><\/p>\n

A regular (dofollow) link would look like this:

So the only difference is that the nofollow tag tells search engines not to pass any SEO value, but simply to acknowledge the link as a reference.<\/p>\n

In contrast, a dofollow link signals to search engines that they should<\/em> pass on value.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no need to explicitly add a tag for this, since dofollow<\/a> is the default for most websites.<\/p>\n

Are nofollow links bad?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Not at all.<\/p>\n

A nofollow link can still drive traffic to your site.<\/p>\n

And when working with link building<\/a>, it’s actually a good idea to aim for a natural-looking backlink profile.<\/p>\n
