{"id":8663,"date":"2019-07-12T09:38:15","date_gmt":"2019-07-12T07:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staging1787817111.mickyweis.comfra-et-sommerhus-paa-fanoe-og-regnvejr-til-stor-millionomsaetning\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T12:07:36","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T10:07:36","slug":"interview-mollymy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging1787817111.mickyweis.com\/en\/interview-mollymy\/","title":{"rendered":"From rainy days in a beach house to a booming million-dollar brand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>We live in a time where equality and female entrepreneurship are widely discussed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is much talk about how to increase female representation in leadership roles and boardrooms, something I\u2019d like to contribute to in my own way.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve worked with many amazing women and follow countless inspiring ones who, besides my wonderful mother, deserve a huge high five.<\/p>\n<p>Among them are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/nannabergmann\/\">Nanna Bergman,<\/a> now at Google in London, whom I met while consulting for ARLA; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/malou-aamund-81b8755\/\">Malou Aamund<\/a>, Country Director at Google Denmark; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/camillahessellundlastein\/\">Camilla Hessellund<\/a> from LIX; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/aja-guldhammer-henderson-36b3263\/\">Aja Guldhammer<\/a>, with whom I collaborated on Reshopper; and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/signetrier\/\"> Signe Trier,<\/a> a close colleague from Aarhus University, just to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I\u2019m handing the mic to two of the women I currently work closely with in business: Luise and Karina, the founders of Molly&amp;My, a webshop selling women\u2019s and children\u2019s clothing.<\/p>\n<p>My goal with these posts is to highlight interesting people across different industries\u00a0so others may find inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m blown away by their Jutlandic humility, their grasp of the digital space, their willingness to try new things, and their drive to make things happen. We both started our careers in retail years ago. Later, we both became social workers and were working in separate employment offices when we started the webshop.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, we spent a rainy two-week summer holiday on Fan\u00f8. During that trip, we talked about missing the energy of working in retail and decided to pursue buying and selling again. We chose a webshop because it was something we could manage alongside our jobs. That same day, we came up with the name, contacted and secured our first supplier, and bought a Prestashop site.<\/p>\n<p>We thought we could code a website with a little help from YouTube. We quickly realized otherwise, haha.<\/p>\n<p>Once we had a storefront and tried uploading products, it got too difficult. So, we switched platforms and eventually landed on Shopify. What truly drives us is the constant stream of new projects and the speed with which we can implement and improve things.<\/p>\n<p>We had the idea in mid 2015 and made our first sale just seven weeks later. That pace isn\u2019t for everyone, but it\u2019s how we thrive\u2014efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>From day one, we had a clear vision that Molly&amp;My would grow enough for both of us to go full-time and to create jobs for ourselves\u2014and others.<\/p>\n<p>We also get a real buzz from providing excellent customer service. It may sound clich\u00e9, but one of our goals is to make shopping at Molly&amp;My as personal as possible. It\u2019s such a fun process.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-156133\" src=\"http:\/\/staging1787817111.mickyweis.comwp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/IMG_7189-1024x768-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When things started taking off, Luise quit her job first. To avoid draining Molly&amp;My\u2019s finances, she did bookkeeping for other businesses on the side. Karina went full-time a year later, and at that point, we hired a full-time bookkeeper\u2014who now runs an independent business with two full-time employees.<\/p>\n<p>That accounting business handles everything for Molly&amp;My and about 20 other local companies, from hair salons and fishmongers to construction firms.<\/p>\n<p>You become self-employed because you simply can\u2019t help it. Ever since reading <em>The Secret<\/em>, we\u2019ve tried to live by its philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>We firmly believe that everything we think and wish for is achievable. We try to instill that culture in everyone at our company. Karma is extremely important to us, and we make it a point never to speak ill of anyone\u2014whether competitors or others in the industry.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_have_been_your_4-5_biggest_challenges\"><\/span><strong>What have been your 4-5 biggest challenges?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To be honest, we face multiple challenges every single day. We often joke that we\u2019re like boxer Brian going up against Mike Tyson\u2014we take a lot of hits but stay on our feet.<\/p>\n<p>As a two-person company, liquidity and cash flow have always been tough. We didn\u2019t have much money to start with, and fast growth only added to the challenge. This is something we constantly work on.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the mechanics of online retail was another hurdle. We spent countless hours on YouTube, business forums, blogs, and Google to gain basic know-how. Looking back at our early forum posts, we really started from scratch.<\/p>\n<p>IT continues to be a daily struggle. Neither of us is tech-savvy, so even simple things\u2014like moving a computer\u2014can be a challenge. We had a spare cable and still couldn\u2019t figure it out, though everything worked fine, haha.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve learned that challenges come and go. It all depends on how you choose to face them. We give ourselves ten minutes to vent\u2014and then it\u2019s back in the saddle with a positive attitude.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_you_balance_entrepreneurship_with_family_life\"><\/span><strong>How do you balance entrepreneurship with family life?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For us, it\u2019s been manageable because everyone around us is invested in Molly&amp;My. Of course, it requires many hours, and work and free time aren\u2019t separate. But everyone has understood that Molly&amp;My is both a passion and a job.<\/p>\n<p>As the business grew\u2014while we were both still working 37-hour jobs\u2014our mom stepped in to help with packaging. She\u2019s been self-employed our whole lives, so she was flexible and eager to help.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-156080\" src=\"http:\/\/staging1787817111.mickyweis.comwp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/65736506_2263892573731766_5374401789913202688_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our entire network has been incredibly supportive and interested. Family members and partners helped with packaging and product listings early on. Our husbands struggled a bit when they had to describe a glittery tulle skirt, though!<\/p>\n<p>Our dad works over 60 hours a week as a master butcher, yet still comes by the warehouse after work to clean or take out cardboard. Our parents are just as invested in the company as we are. Fortunately, our husbands are more tech-savvy than we are.<\/p>\n<p>Luise\u2019s 8-year-old son Joakim often spends several days a week at the warehouse and loves it. He enjoys hanging out with the young employees and sometimes plays pranks\u2014like when he stuck a wad of sticky tack under our bookkeeper\u2019s shoe.<\/p>\n<p>We also have the best colleagues at Molly&amp;My, always ready to go the extra mile. How do you even begin?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s no other way than deciding to go for it\u2014and then just starting. We didn\u2019t have a pile of cash or easy access to financing. It takes nerves of steel.<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t start with the skills or knowledge needed for e-commerce. But we had the will. Once we commit to something, we give it 100%.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why we believe anyone can do what we did. You need enough drive and must be willing to put in the countless hours it takes.<\/p>\n<p>We launch new initiatives at about 70\u201380% completeness\u2014then adjust later. If we waited until everything was perfect, we\u2019d never get anything off the ground.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_does_the_future_hold_for_two_driven_souls_like_you\"><\/span><strong>What does the future hold for two driven souls like you?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We feel like we\u2019re just getting started with Molly&amp;My. There are so many development opportunities and so much potential. Our advisors even say they fear sending us on vacation together, wondering what wild new ideas we\u2019ll bring home.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, we still have thousands of ideas for Molly&amp;My and several side projects we\u2019re planning to develop over the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>One day, we may bring more people on board, but only in a setup where we\u2019re still actively involved.<\/p>\n<p>We both thrive on the energy of creating new things. Luckily, that aligns perfectly with continuing to build Molly&amp;My.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s only in 2019 that we began looking at redesigning our website. It\u2019s been mostly homemade since we picked a theme in 2015, and we\u2019ve handled most technical maintenance and SEO ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>But now it\u2019s time to bring in some real expertise.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many exciting things on the horizon.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_you_have_any_tips_for_fellow_passionate_entrepreneurs_men_or_women\"><\/span><strong>Do you have any tips for fellow passionate entrepreneurs, men or women?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s all about the will to achieve the goals you set for yourself. And about daring to take the leap. What\u2019s the worst that can happen?<\/p>\n<p>From the heart, we believe that anyone who wants to <a href=\"http:\/\/staging1787817111.mickyweis.comen\/start-ecommerce-business\/\">start a webshop <\/a>can do it. Get support from your family and be ready to seek out all the knowledge yourself.
