What is an internal link? (Internal linkbuilding)

Internal linkbuilding is another way of saying that you link to subpages within your own website. Let’s assume you own a website with several hundred subpages. You create a homepage text where you want to link internally across your site.

That is basically what internal links cover.

A sharp reader might wonder whether menu links on the website are also considered internal links.

The answer is yes! All links that point internally on the site (meaning you are not linking to other domains) can be categorized as internal links.

For example, if I link to my SEO guide, since it’s a link to another subpage on the same sit, it is an internal link. If instead I linked to a guide written by someone else, that would be considered an external link.

Why is internal linkbuilding important?

Internal linkbuilding is an incredibly important discipline, which unfortunately is often overlooked and forgotten. With internal links, you get a unique opportunity to tell search engine crawlers what each of your subpages is about.

Therefore, if you are not already linking internally from your on-page texts, I highly recommend you start doing so immediately.
